Shot through spine: Tharisa mine foreman Braam Blignaut: wife Izulda fled amidst a hail of bullets

Mine-foreman Braam Blignaut permanently disabled: shot in spine by two black gunmen at Mooinooi Rustenburg North West province smallholding -- His wife fled from two black gunmen amidst a hail of bullets. By 16 July 2015 Mr Blignaut was still reportedly in a critical condition at the ICU unit of the KwaRankuwa Bophuthatswana homeland hospital.
---------
Journalist George Germishuys writes a week after the attack at a Mooinooi smallholding:
Wednesday 15 July 2015:
“Baby can I run', young mom Izulda Blignaut whispered to her husband Braam - who is a foreman at the Tharisa mine -- during an ambush by two black gunmen at their smallholding near Mooinooi.
He whispered back: 'my bokka, run now, here they come'... as she fled from the backdoor of their house in the Buffelsfontein area of North West.
She heard her husband scream as shots were fired into his spine, leaving him permanently disabled.
Braam Blignaut now is on a ventilator at the Ga-Rankuwa hospital. The only items 'robbed' were R250 (about $18 US); a costume-jewellery trinket and a camera.
Braam was shot three times, leaving the sixth and seventh vertebrae of his spine crushed.
The couple's four children were at home. Izulda said the dogs started barking just before Izulda and the children went to sleep on Thursday-evening 7 July 2015.
Braam was working 5km at the mine. Later that night the dogs woke up again and she heard whispering at their window. Izulda texted her husband at the mine.
As he arrived he was ambushed, forced to open the back door and one black dragged her from bed with a handgun pointed to her head.
"I saw that my husband and children were tied up in the living room and I was very, very frightened. They tore a rag and tied my hands together.
My husband, whose hands were tied up with one of my belts, was able to get his hands lose.
The thugs kept asking: 'Where 's the laptop computer and the money' and Braam gave them R250.
Braam also heard the two blacks discuss whether they would rape the Afrikaner mom.
When the thugs turned on the living room lights Izulda realized that she would be able to recognize them later.
So while they searched their home, she quietly asked her husband whether she should run, asking him if he left the back door open.
'He nodded back,' she said.
As she ran, one of the gunman grabbed her in the garden and she fought back, kicked the man's gun from his hand and ran to the neighbour's house.
The attacker also shot towards the neighbour but he than ran away.
"While I was outside, I heard three shots and heard my husband screaming,' she said through her tears.
Both attackers then ran away, taking their meagre loot with them.
Izulda said the thugs 'weren't afraid, they were calm and arrogant. I now need pills to get to sleep.
One of the two gunmen were arrested - and the police believe that he may be one of the five trial-awaiting prisoners who had made a puzzling escape from the
Hartbeespoort police cells a week earlier.
