After a night out, a young couple returned home in Muldersdrift only to find three robbers waiting for them.

Christiaan Greyling and his girlfriend, Angelique du Toit, entered their property at around 8pm one night in October. They returned from a night out after along day’s work.

Upon driving through the gate, Angelique saw that something was not right.

“She asked me why the doors were open,” Christiaan recalled.

Christiaan immediately put the car in reverse and drove in the opposite direction, trying to get away from an armed robber that suddenly appeared from the house with a gun in his hand.

“He shot at the car four times. Three of the bullets scattered inside the car, the fourth went straight through me,” he said.

Only about five minutes after he was shot, on his way back into town, Christiaan realised he had been shot.

“It felt like fire repeatedly burning through my body,” he said.

On their way to hospital, Angelique changed gears and Christiaan steered the car. Blood smeared all over the front and passenger seats. When they finally got to the emergency room, police officers were already on their way to Christiaan. The bullet ricocheted against his ribs and towards his left arm, leaving him with three gunshot wounds that nearly hit his heart.

Christiaan is able to go back to work, but he is still recovering from the gunshot wounds.

The three armed men went back the following day, where police, who was in the area, arrested them.

“The next Thursday, Angelique was asked to identify one suspect. He was positively identified and arrested,” Christiaan continued. The couple is now, after eight months in Muldersdrift, living in another place while they look for a unit within a security complex.

“I used to love living on the farm. But it’s just not safe enough.”

Two weeks before the incident, Christiaan’s motorbike was also stolen at the same property.

Christiaan told the News that he remembers thinking that he needed to get him and Angelique to safety. He thought the were going to die if they did not get away.

Still able to walk and work as a mechanic, Christiaan is thankful for his life.

“If something like this ever happens to you, remember to stay focused, don’t confront them and don’t panic,” he explained.
