The young man that was shot dead in Irene, Centurion, last week was killed while trying to protect his friends.

Calden Cunha (21), a Val De Grace resident, was shot in the chest while confronting two suspected robbers who had surprised his friends.

His mother, Vennaleen Cunha said her son was outside Railways Café in the parking lot on the other side of the shopping centre with two female friends.

As he walked back into the restaurant, leaving his friends behind, he heard screaming from behind.

“Two men had come out of the dark and shot into the ground to scare the two girls. It seems they wanted to steal my son’s car. My son ran back,” she told Rekord.

She said her son fought off one of the men but the other turned to him and shot him in the chest.

“It was a fatal shot. He dropped there and then and died a few seconds later. The two men ran away without taking anything,” she said.

Railway Café’s TJ Bryant said they became aware of the shooting when a lady came into the restaurant to ask for help.

“A lady came running to our shop asking for help. We then proceeded to the other side to assist.”

Cunha said her son was a happy child.

“He lit up everyone’s life. This is so devastating. It is the worst thing to lose your child in such a senseless killing. They could have taken anything. They did not have to kill him.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said no arrests were made yet.

“We are investigating a murder.” http://rekordcenturion.co.za/69740/young-man-killed-in-irene-for-protecting-friends/#.Vm_0qH2yzsA.facebook
