Cape Town -
Danie du Toit, of Weltevreden Farm, is now in a Cape Town hospital, battered and disorientated.

The men, who have not been arrested, entered through a front window, before ransacking the home and assaulting Du Toit and his wife, Martie.

The couple’s son, Marius, said his mother had fallen asleep on the couch and the robbers came across her first before moving to his sleeping father.

“They taped her mouth and bound her hands and her feet as well. My father woke up to see what was happening.”

Marius said his father usually had a gun under his bed, but had put it in the safe because he wanted to vacuum the room.

“So he couldn’t get it and he had to fight for his life.”

Du Toit was left with a swollen face and has internal bleeding in his skull. His wife managed to free herself at about 2am and called her son, who lives nearby.

Marius said his father defended himself before being knocked unconscious. “The way they treated my father was vicious. He had to fight for his life. The blow to the head – I think they tried to kill him.”

He said the valley was in shock.

“I am a little scared – you don’t know who to suspect. You never know when they will strike again. Some people in this country don’t have any respect for life.”

Marius said his mother was unharmed, but in shock.

He said the robbers got access to the safe and took weapons from it.

“(Ironically) they asked for money but there was no money in the safe. The money was all in my dad’s purse on top of the safe, and they didn’t take it, they missed that.”

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the attack and appealed to members of the public to help police with any information that could lead to arrests.

“It is unknown how the suspects fled the scene. They took five firearms, wine, a television set and jewellery.”

He said police were investigating a case of house robbery.
