CALLING for life sentences for six men who murdered an elderly couple on their Theescombe smallholding in 2009, a seasoned prosecutor said it was the worst, most brutal case he had ever come across
“Putting a gun to their heads and pulling the trigger would have been merciful,” state advocate Marius Stander said yesterday.
Instead, George, 78, and Jacoba Venter, 67, were bludgeoned to death.

Mbulelo Breakfast, 31, Vuyo Plaatjies, 30, Makwenkwe Pamle, 30, Lukhanyo Bolo, 25, and Zonwabo Kilani, 31, gained entry to the Venters’ home on the night of May 31 2009 by smashing open a window.
They then tied up the couple and beat them mercilessly before making a getaway with electronics, money and jewellery.
The couple’s domestic worker made the gruesome discovery the next morning.
George was already dead and Jacoba lay next to him, fighting for her life. She died days later in hospital.
