The fun of a Friday night family get-together and social at a Lewis Drive, Amanzimtoti home was shattered when gunmen stormed in, shot and killed a resident last night, 19 February – allegedly in front of young children.
The family were hosting a social function when, at about 10.30pm, at least four criminals scaled the fence of the home.
At least one was brandishing a firearm, and the father and home owner intervened and pleaded in Zulu with the men to take what they wanted but to not harm anyone and to leave the children alone. According to sources, a tussle ensued and the man was fatally shot. It is understood he died at the scene.
Community Crime Prevention Organisation operations manager Leon Joone said they responded to a call-out from a neighbour. He said Toti police were swift in responding to the scene, with detectives and the station commander arriving shortly thereafter.
Joone said it appeared two men had been involved in a scuffle with the criminals. When the CCPO arrived, a woman and a child were found in the garden, taking cover and awaiting the police’s arrival. The robbers fled with jewellery and cell phones.
