A young Pretoria man has described the pain, fear and anguish he and his family went through during a farm attack in Kameeldrift west that left one person dead.
The 25-year-old JJ Venter survived an attack by a group of armed black attackers that claimed the life of a friend on Friday.
Venter, who was shot in the back once, recalled how his family were terrified after hearing multiply gunfire outside their door.
“Four armed black men came into our yard around 23:00 and attacked Nico (Ras), who was outside smoking. He was shot several times.”
Ras died in hospital the same evening from four bullet wounds.
Venter said he saw four attackers.
“My wife and I saw the attack on Nico from the window. The attackers tried to get into the house but Nico’s wife used pepper spray on the them to protect herself and her son,” he said.
Venter said one of the attackers tried to gain entry into their room.
“My wife put up a mattress against the door when she realised that the attackers could come after us. One of them tried to open our door but couldn’t. He got frustrated and fired three shots into the door.”
“At that time, my wife was calling the police while I was on the floor praying. My daughter was also inside the room terrified.”
The attackers fired through the window, the bullet hit Venter in his back and he lost consciousness.
“I woke up a few hours later in hospital and my wife told me what had happened. The robbers left on foot,” he said.
“I’m recovering well even though my back is still sore. I was discharged from hospital on Sunday.”
Two phones were stolen which belonged to Ras and his wife, Venter said.
Venter’s wife Marliese said she was glad to have her husband back at home.
“I’m happy that my husband is alive even though he is in a lot of pain,” she said.
A friend of the Ras family, who didn’t want to be identified, said the family and friends were in shock.
“We still hypnotised by the events. We are not sure who those guys were but rumour has it that they are Zimbabwean nationals but we will leave that to the police.”
Best Care spokesperson Xander Loubser said a team of Best Care paramedics responded to the scene, and that both men had been shot in the upper body.
“It was difficult for emergency personnel to breathe or see at the scene because of pepper spray fumes,” he said.
Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said a murder was being investigated.
“We are aware of the incident and no arrests have been made so far.”
The gang was believed to have previously terrorised the community but Mufamadi could not confirm this.
