Cullinan 1 October 2015: one black attacker is dead, one was arrested after grandchild 6 was threatened with rifle
"We can just be grateful we're alive. Things could have gone so badly wrong. When those shots went off I prayed that the Lord would
help us,' said farmer André de Koning 66, on Thursday, speaking to Maroela Media about the ordeal he, wife Linda 64 and
their 3 grandchildren endured on Wednesda-afternoon when the Cullinan family-farm was attacked by two black gunmen.
André was working on his farm outside the homestead at 15h00 when he got a call from the housekeeper he was unable to respond to in time:
"It was a strange call to me because she never rings me'. He rang back but when she failed to answer he knew that
there was trouble at the homestead. He took two of grandchildren who were with him, back to the homestead
and then saw his third grandson, six years old, stand at the farm gate 'Staring at me with big eyes, he said: '
granddad there are men with guns inside the house'. He ordered his grandchildren to go and hide behind a wall
next to the swimming pool and went with his pistol at the ready quietly into the house.
However as soon as he entered the door one of the black gunmen fired a shot in his direction.
André and the gunmen were hiding behind 'objects' while engaging in a gunfight, he said.
One shot hit one of the rifle-men in the head, and the other one rushed up the stairs with me in hot pursuit.
However I had no bullets left in my clip. I was at the upper floor and grabbed my shotgun'.
The rifleman fled downstairs - and André quickly rushed a WhatsApp message to the local farm-security group.
Then he phoned the police. Shortly thereafter the second rifleman was captured while the first man was declared at the scene.
Before André arrived and engaged the riflemen in the gunfight, his wife Linda was brutally beaten by the blacks hitting her with their rifle-butts in her face.
She also was badly bruised. And their little grandson was inside the house when the riflemen rushed through the door,
held a rifle to his head and threatened to shoot the little boy if Linda failed to open the gun-safe for them.
She agreed under the proviso that they would let her grandson leave the house.
And shortly thereafter André had spotted the traumatised Afrikaner child at the farm gate and rushed inside.
André said that 'people should know that you must protect yourself at all times." The family is going for trauma-treatment, he said.
"That's why I am never without my firearm. "I am also deeply grateful to the Lord for sparing our lives. It was traumatic but in another way it was good
because this reminds us that we must cling to our Faith. Even when things go poorly we must fight our fight and trust that the Lord
will protect us'. SAPS captain Sarah Mcira in Cullinan said dockets of house-robbery and murder (against the farmer) are being investigated.
The surviving suspect appeared on remand in Cullinan magistrate's court and was ordered back to police custody. (There is no mention in this report of anything having been 'robbed' during the attack. We are awaiting further details in this regard from the police)
